A letter from LouWauna Obert:
WOW! What a difference your company made for the victims and volunteers of Joplin!
My friends and family left early in the morning on the 18th with one thing in mind....give the people of Joplin not only "cold" water, but a way to keep it cold while they spend numerous months cleaning up what is left of their homes.
The Home Depot donated almost 200 cases of water for our mission. We put a message out to all of our friends that we needed coolers and LOTS of them! I have never seen so many coolers in one spot in all my life. Not only coolers, but we bought some kiddie pools to fill up with ice and water as well. We were determined to get as much water as cold as possible.
Once in Joplin, we started packing thermal bags with the cold water. We had about 6 teams of drivers to head out into the devastated areas. Each team took 20 to 40 bags full of water along with a cooler full of water as well. The plan was simple... offer people a cold water out of the cooler to drink right away and then give them a thermal bag and explain to them that it will keep the water cold for hours, plus- it was theirs to keep and re-use everyday. They were ecstatic!!!! Most of them couldn't believe that we were just driving around handing out thermal bags full of water. They LOVED it!!!
I only got to go out on one "round" since the rest of the time I was making sack lunches for our drivers to deliver.... but the deliveries that I did make during that round were memorable. The first house we came to, there were three or four men on a roof. I asked if they wanted cold water (in the 90 degree heat), and of course, the answer was yes! So, one gentleman scooted down to the lowest point of the roof and I lifted up two thermal bags to him. They thanked us over and over, but the picture I got is worth a million words.... You can't balance a big cooler on a roof, but guess what... you can sit an American Bag Company Thermal Bag full of ice cold water on the roof and never have to climb down the ladder to get a refreshing drink! Priceless!
The second gentleman I met, along with his son had lost pretty much everything. I have their picture attached too. The top floor of their house was picked up and moved off to the side of the house (in the yard). They survived the storm while huddling in the bathroom. The entire house was destroyed. They were working away when we walked up to offer them water. When we explained that your company had donated the bags and Home Depot donated the water, the father said "It is because of people like you, out here doing this for us, that shows us that God is Love".
I couldn't have said it better myself.
From the bottom of my heart and from all of my friends and family that have been with me on my trips to help Joplin- we thank you all!!!
The picture where you can't read the sign was taken after we got the first round of thermal bags loaded. The sun blocked out the sign. The other one is after a full day's work- we were a little worn out, but wanted to make sure that you all knew how thankful we were.
My sincerest appreciation-
LouWauna Obert
